Even though the mixed color, or "parti" color poodles may seem new to us. It was an original color and a common breed trait. Many of the early paintings of poodles feature the black and white, parti poodles. They are definitely striking with their contrast. The Parti gene is not a product of mixed breeding in poodles, it is a naturally occurring recessive coat pattern. Even though there were no health issues related to this genetic trait, the breeders decided at some point that solid colors were preferred. After generations and many decades of attempting to breed out this trait, the genetic tendency still shows up when least expected. Alex is a second generation parti poodle. It was quite a shock when spotted puppies showed up from a breeding of two AKC champion silver standard poodles.
